Theodore Roosevelt returned to New York in 1910 after more than a year abroad, having left the presidency in March 1909 and spent much of that time on an African hunting expedition and a long tour of Europe. The welcome he received at the city's piers and streets drew enormous crowds, and in this picture he is seen answering the greeting in person, a moment that captured how much public attention he still commanded. Roosevelt's homecoming came at a politically charged time, as he had begun to reconsider his earlier decision not to seek another term, and his speeches that year would soon signal his break with the Republican old guard.
