Secret Service men gathered at Sagamore Hill, the Oyster Bay, New York home of Theodore Roosevelt, in September 1908, during the final months of his presidency. Roosevelt had made the estate his summer and weekend retreat, and by then the agents assigned to guard the president were a fixture there, a reminder of the threats he had faced since William McKinley's assassination in 1901. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the Bain News Service archive of glass negatives that documented American news from the early twentieth century. Its title and date come from the Bain caption data, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified, so the identities of the individual men are not recorded here.
