A crowd gathers outside the Roosevelt house at Oyster Bay on Long Island in this September 1908 view, when Theodore Roosevelt was still president. He spent many summers at his home there, Sagamore Hill, and the estate drew visiting well-wishers, politicians and reporters who waited for a glimpse of him. The picture survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York news photography agency's files, which were built for quick newspaper use. The Library of Congress notes that its title comes from unverified agency data, so the exact house and the occasion are worth checking against other sources.
