Theodore Roosevelt's summer home at Oyster Bay, on the north shore of Long Island, is the setting named in this glass negative's title, and it is one of the few places where the former president spent extended time away from Washington. Roosevelt, who called the estate Sagamore Hill, used it as a family base and a gathering spot for political visitors well after he left the White House in 1909. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information written by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency whose glass negatives reached the Library of Congress through the George Grantham Bain Collection. The negative is broken and flaking, a common condition for glass plates of this age.
