Oyster Bay on Long Island was Theodore Roosevelt's home base, and his estate, Sagamore Hill, lay just outside the village. This 1912 glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the photographs of the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. That year Roosevelt was seeking the presidency again as the Progressive ("Bull Moose") candidate after breaking with the Republican Party, so pictures of him from this period often served the campaign news cycle. The title comes from the agency's own caption data, which may not be fully verified, so the exact occasion is best confirmed against the catalog record.
