Oyster Bay on Long Island was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, and his family estate, Sagamore Hill, sits on the hills above the harbor there. The title comes from caption data supplied by the Bain News Service, which was not verified, so the exact occasion and date are uncertain. Bain's staff photographed prominent New Yorkers and national figures for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative reflects that work. Roosevelt spent much of his time at Oyster Bay in the years after he left the presidency in 1909, so the setting is worth noticing for its connection to his later life.
