Oyster Bay, on Long Island's north shore, was home to Theodore Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill estate, and this 1908 glass negative shows him addressing a crowd gathered outside it. Visitors and reporters often came to the house during his presidency, and he sometimes spoke to them from the grounds. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and it dates to his last year in office, before he left the White House in 1909. The caption's details are unverified, so the exact occasion is best understood as one moment in his public life at home.
