Theodore Roosevelt is shown here in his library at Sagamore Hill, his home in Oyster Bay on Long Island, New York, which is what sets this portrait apart from the many formal studio images of him from his years in public life. The picture dates to about 1912, the year he ran for president again as the Progressive Party candidate after breaking with the Republicans. Its setting of books and a private study presents him as a writer and thinker rather than only a political figure, a side of him that was widely known, since he wrote dozens of books on history, nature and politics. The photograph was registered for copyright at the time, which is why it carries a Copyright Office number in its record.
