Theodore Roosevelt is shown in his library at Sagamore Hill, his home in Oyster Bay, New York, a setting he used for both work and writing. The photographer, William H. Rau of Philadelphia, was a well-known studio photographer and the print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which suggests it was produced for wide circulation. Around 1912 Roosevelt was campaigning for the presidency again as the Progressive Party candidate, so images like this one helped shape how a former president presented himself to the public. The room's bookshelves and desk make it a useful window into his scholarly and literary habits.
