Two heads-and-shoulders portraits, of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, share this engraving with an eagle and two American flags, a pairing typical of the patriotic prints that circulated during the 1900 presidential campaign. The Republican ticket of McKinley and Roosevelt won that election, and the design presents the two men as a single national team. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which suggests it was meant for wide sale. Within a year, McKinley was assassinated and Roosevelt took office, so the image now records the ticket at the moment before its partnership was cut short.
