Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 visit to Yellowstone is the setting here, with the President posed beside Major Pitcher in front of Liberty Cap, a tall cone-shaped formation of geyser deposits. Roosevelt made the trip as a guest of the federal government and spent several days in the park, touring its geysers and wildlife areas, which helped build his enthusiasm for conservation. Major John Pitcher, who had served as Yellowstone's superintendent, was the official who showed the President around. Liberty Cap is a long extinct geyser, so the photograph captures a formation that had already stopped erupting by the time of the visit, offering a glimpse of the park's geologic history alongside its famous visitors.
