Roosevelt is shown mounted, with the speech given at the entrance to Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the United States, established in 1872. His 1903 journey through the West was part of a broader effort to promote conservation, and he used the park's gateway to press for keeping its landscape protected. The stone arch at the north entrance, built in part to mark that occasion, became a symbol of his view that the nation's wild places should be preserved for public use. Note how the photograph pairs the president's public role with the rugged setting he championed.
