Theodore Roosevelt is shown here on the threshold of Yellowstone, the card's title casting him as a man stepping away from "the cares of state" to enter the park, with horses and a railroad car in view. Roosevelt visited Yellowstone in spring 1903, when he camped with naturalist John Burroughs and the park's superintendent, Samuel Young, and he was an avid outdoorsman who had long believed in preserving wild country. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm, produced stereograph cards like this one by the thousands for home viewers, so the image was staged to tell a story about a president at leisure as much as to record a single moment. Its date of about 1902 places it just before that trip, a useful clue for anyone tracing how Roosevelt's public image mixed rugged outdoors with the presidency.
