Roosevelt is pictured at Fort Yellowstone, the Army post at Mammoth Hot Springs, as he prepared for his trip through the park in 1903. The U.S. Army had administered Yellowstone since 1886, and the fort served as its headquarters and supply base, so the setting reflects the government's role in protecting the park during its early decades. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for stereograph cards viewed through a stereoscope, issued the card later that year, so the two side-by-side images create a sense of depth that a single print cannot.
