Roosevelt is shown speaking from his train at Colorado Springs, Colorado, a stop that reflects the whistle-stop style of campaigning presidents used in the early 1900s to reach voters far from Washington. Addressing crowds from a train during brief station stops let a president meet local audiences in person, and Roosevelt, who traveled widely and spoke often, made such appearances a regular part of his public life. The card was issued by the H.C. White Company of North Bennington, Vermont, around 1905. Viewed through a stereoscope, it gave the scene a sense of depth, a popular way for Americans of the period to see distant events and places.
