Taken in front of Chief Engineer Stevens's residence at Culebra, this group portrait shows Theodore Roosevelt with the canal builders he came to inspect in November 1906. Roosevelt was the first sitting president to travel outside the United States, and the visit was meant to show his personal commitment to the Panama Canal while excavation through the Culebra Cut was at its most difficult. A. Bienkowski made the photograph in Ancon, and it survives as a halftone print, a method that let newspapers and magazines reproduce such images in quantity.
