Roosevelt's visit to the Canal Zone in November 1906 was a notable first: he became the first sitting president to travel outside the United States while in office. The image was taken at Empire, a construction town on the Panama Railroad near the Culebra Cut, where American engineers were excavating the canal. The photographer, Fishbaugh, worked in the Canal Zone, and the print is one of several portraits from the period that recorded American officials and workers there. The visit was part of Roosevelt's push to finish the canal, which he regarded as among the most important projects of his presidency.
