Guests gather on the White House lawn with the Washington Monument rising in the distance, a view that sets the presidential grounds against the city's most famous landmark. Taken around 1905, during Theodore Roosevelt's time in office, the picture records the social side of his administration, when garden parties on the executive grounds were a recurring feature of Washington life. Underwood & Underwood, the firm that made it, produced stereographs in large numbers for home viewers using a stereoscope, so the image was meant to be seen in three dimensions, which gives the lawn and crowd a sense of depth.
