Here Theodore Roosevelt is shown at a desk in the White House, pen in hand, at one of the bill-signing sessions that filled much of a president's working day in the early 1900s. The picture was issued in 1903 by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company and registered for copyright, which was the usual route by which studio views of government life reached a broad public. Roosevelt, who had taken office after William McKinley's assassination in 1901, was then building a reputation as an active executive who took a hands-on role in lawmaking. Photographs like this one helped present the presidency as a visible, working office.
