This halftone shows "The Den," the study at Sagamore Hill, the Oyster Bay, Long Island, home that Theodore Roosevelt used as the summer White House during his presidency. Roosevelt worked there when he was away from Washington, and the room served as his headquarters for correspondence, reading, and official business. The picture ran in *Town & Country* on June 7, 1902, on pages 10 and 11, part of the magazine's interest in the private lives of prominent Americans. Its lens on a working room, rather than a formal portrait, offers a glimpse of how the president spent his time away from the capital.
