Theodore Roosevelt is shown at a desk in the White House, pen in hand, at the moment of putting his name to legislation. The picture is a stereograph, a paired-image card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to give a sense of depth, issued by the New York firm Underwood & Underwood around 1903. Its date places it in Roosevelt's first full term, when he was expanding federal oversight of business and conservation and when the presidency was becoming a far more visible public office, which made images like this popular with a mass audience.
