The East Room appears empty of guests, its tables set with decorations ahead of a dinner Theodore Roosevelt gave for Prince Henry of Pless, a German nobleman and industrialist. As the largest room in the White House, the East Room hosted receptions, balls and formal dinners, so this staged view shows how such evenings were prepared. The card was produced by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereo views to a wide public, but the caption gives no date, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
