Ethel Roosevelt, the youngest daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, was a teenager when this room was photographed in the White House around 1902, the year her father's first full term was underway after William McKinley's assassination in 1901. The picture shows her private bedroom, a space that gave a rare glimpse of family life in the executive mansion at the time. The photograph was made by the Washington studio of Clinedinst, a firm known for portraits and images of official Washington, and it was produced as a commercial print. Its survival in the Library of Congress makes it a useful record of how the Roosevelt children lived in the house during those years.
