Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt from his first marriage, is the figure this view is built around, and her room at the White House gives the picture its personal character. Her bedroom was a private space in a house that was otherwise full of official business, and photographs like this one let viewers peek into the domestic life of the executive mansion. The image was made around 1902, when Alice was a teenager newly famous for her lively, sometimes headline-making public behavior. The photograph was produced by the Washington studio of Clinedinst, a firm known for portraits and views of prominent Washington figures.
