This stereograph records a dinner Theodore Roosevelt gave for Prince Henry of Prussia, brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, in the East Room of the White House. The prince visited the United States in early 1902 on a goodwill tour, and the dinner was one of the formal occasions of that visit. The East Room, the largest room in the executive mansion, was normally used for receptions and public ceremonies, so seeing it set for a sit-down meal shows how the room was adapted for a state occasion. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that published large numbers of stereographs for home viewers with stereoscopes.
