Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, is the figure here, shown as a boy of about eight astride a pony beside a uniformed Washington policeman. The photograph was made in 1905 by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading press and portrait photographer of the era who documented the Roosevelt household and the capital around it. Pictures of the president's children at play were popular with the public, and the Roosevelts were known for keeping their family life lively and informal in the White House years. The Washington police setting places the scene in the streets of the capital, where a boy and his pony would have been a familiar sight.
