Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, is the figure here, shown astride a pony as a small boy. The photograph was taken around 1902 by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of her day, who made many portraits of the Roosevelt family during the years when the president's household was in the White House. Quentin was born in 1897, so he would have been about five at the time, and the family's love of riding and outdoor life was widely known. The print is part of Johnston's collection at the Library of Congress, where it is catalogued among the portraits of the period.
