Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, is shown astride a pony in front of the White House, a setting that places the boy at the center of the family's public life during the Roosevelt years. The photograph is one of the many pictures Frances Benjamin Johnston made of the president's children, whose lively pets and outdoor pursuits drew wide attention in the press. Johnston was among the leading women photographers of her day, and her studio work from this period documents the informal side of a presidency that often welcomed the public through its doors. Dated only tentatively to about 1900, the print is a useful glimpse of early twentieth-century family portraiture.
