Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, is the subject here, shown receiving riding instruction at the White House in June 1902. He was about four years old at the time, the youngest of the Roosevelt children, and the family's stables and grounds were a frequent setting for their lessons and outdoor play. The photograph was made by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent press and portrait photographers of the period, who documented the Roosevelt household extensively. Her images of the children offer a rare, informal view of family life inside the executive mansion during the early years of the twentieth century.
