Two boys stand among the flowers on the White House grounds in this photograph, Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Roswell Newcomb Pinckney, the son of the White House steward Henry Pinckney. Frances Benjamin Johnston, the Washington photographer who documented the Roosevelt household, took the picture between 1900 and 1905, a period when the family's children were frequently photographed in the public and private rooms of the executive mansion. The image is worth noticing for its informal pairing of two boys at a time when the country's racial hierarchy was rigidly enforced, though the record says little more about the circumstances of the sitting.
