Two boys sit together on a flight of steps in this photograph, one of them Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt. His companion is Roswell Newcomb Pinckney, whose father was a steward at the White House, so the children were part of the household life of the executive mansion. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who often photographed the Roosevelt family and the White House during these years, made the picture around June 17, 1902. The original caption card misidentifies Pinckney, and the Library of Congress catalog corrects the name.
