Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, appears at play with Roswell Pinckney in this print from around June 1902, when the Roosevelt family was living in the White House. Quentin was still a small child, and the president's children drew steady press attention, so candid pictures of them were widely circulated. The image is notable for its ordinary subject: two boys playing outdoors in Washington, one of them Black, at a time when photographs of Black children were more often posed to fit stereotypes.
