Two small boys stand together in this 1901 portrait: Quentin Roosevelt, son of Theodore Roosevelt, and Roswell Newcomb Pinckney, a playmate of about the same age. The Library of Congress catalogs the picture within the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, and staff devised the title from a 2008 source supplied by a Pinckney family member. The year places the sitting in the first months of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, when his young children were becoming familiar public figures. Johnston's work for the Roosevelts and others of the period is valued for its informal, candid views of children.
