Here the photographer is a child: Archie Roosevelt, the youngest of President Theodore Roosevelt's sons, is pointing a camera at his younger brother Quentin in 1902. The picture comes from Frances Benjamin Johnston's collection, and Johnston was one of the most prominent women photographers of the period, known for her work at the White House during the Roosevelt years. Family images like this were unusual for the time, when official portraits of presidents were formal and carefully staged. The scene offers a relaxed glimpse into the busy household, where the Roosevelt children were often photographed at play.
