Here the camera is in the hands of a child: Archie Roosevelt, around eight years old, aims a box camera at his younger brother Quentin, about five, in an outdoor setting. Both boys were sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was in the second year of his presidency when the picture was made in 1902. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of her day, took many portraits of the Roosevelt family, and this one is part of her collection at the Library of Congress. The image is a reminder that amateur photography was already a popular pastime for families at the turn of the twentieth century.
