Archie Roosevelt stands in front in this 1918 full-length portrait, with his brother Kermit and Kermit's wife, Eleanor, behind him, and the two men wear military uniform. Archie and Kermit were sons of former President Theodore Roosevelt, and both served in the First World War, Kermit with British forces in the Middle East and Archie in France, where he was wounded. The photograph, taken by Richard Derby, captures a family posed during the final year of the war, when many families were sending sons overseas and watching for news from the front. The record does not describe the setting in detail, so the picture is best read as a record of one family's wartime experience.
