Two of President Theodore Roosevelt's younger sons, Archie and Quentin, pose here with uniformed White House policemen, a detail that sets this picture apart from the family portraits around it. The Roosevelts' residence was a busy and closely watched household in the early 1900s, and the boys were known for roaming the grounds, riding ponies, and getting into mischief, so the scene hints at the everyday life of a presidential family. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent photographer of the era who often documented the White House, made the image, which is now held by the Library of Congress.
