Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, was about four years old when this portrait was made in June 1902, a period when the family was living in the White House. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent photographers of the era and a frequent visitor to the Roosevelts, made many images of the children, and this one captures the boy's youth at a moment when his father's presidency drew intense public attention to the household. Johnston's work is valued for its informal, carefully composed treatment of her sitters, and portraits like this offer a glimpse of the private life behind the official image of the administration.
