Theodore Roosevelt's second inaugural address, delivered on March 4, 1905, is the event this stereograph preserves, with the president speaking before the Capitol's east front to a large crowd gathered on the grounds. Stereo cards like this one were sold by the thousands in the early 1900s, and International View Co. of Decatur, Illinois, issued this view as part of that trade. Roosevelt had taken office after William McKinley's assassination in 1901 and was elected in his own right in 1904, so the ceremony marked his first full term. The stereo pair's two slightly offset images, viewed through a hand viewer, would have given the crowd and the speaker a sense of depth that a flat photograph could not.
