Theodore Roosevelt sits for this portrait in his new private office, a room set apart from the busier executive offices where he conducted public business. The photograph was made around 1903 by Benjamin Clinedinst, a Washington portrait photographer whose copyright notice appears on the print. Roosevelt had taken office in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and his energetic public image was a deliberate part of his presidency. Portraits like this one helped the public picture the man behind that image.
