Theodore Roosevelt appears here in uniform with fellow members of the Rough Riders, the volunteer cavalry regiment he helped raise for the Spanish-American War, which the caption calls the Cuban War. The regiment fought in Cuba in the summer of 1898, most famously in the assault on San Juan Hill near Santiago, an action that made Roosevelt a national figure. The card's date of about 1902 places it during his presidency, when his wartime reputation was still central to his public image. Stereo views like this were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, and the caption details are unverified.
