Photographed seated in a jeep in France, Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was pictured in 1944, the year he died in Normandy. The eldest son of former President Theodore Roosevelt served as assistant commander of the 4th Infantry Division and came ashore at Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, at age 56. The jeep, a light utility vehicle that became a symbol of American mobility during the war, places him in the field rather than a formal studio setting. The portrait was credited to Walter Scott Shinn of New York.
