The former president sits at close range, looking down at a small child in his arms, a tender contrast to the forceful public image he cultivated. The child is his grandson Kermit Roosevelt Jr., son of Theodore's second son, Kermit. By about 1916, Roosevelt had been out of office for seven years and was still a prominent voice in national politics, so the picture shows a more domestic side of a man better known for his public battles. The downward gaze turns the frame toward the child rather than toward the camera.
