Here Theodore Roosevelt sits with his head bowed, looking down at a young grandchild, Kermit Roosevelt Jr., rather than facing the camera with the forceful stance he was known for. By 1916 he had been out of office since 1909 and remained a loud voice in national politics, so a domestic portrait like this offered a softer view of a figure usually seen in speeches and cartoons. The print was submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office, which helps explain why it survives in the Library of Congress collections. Roosevelt died in January 1919.
