Rather than a photograph, this item is a color halftone reproduction, one of a numbered set in the Famous American Series, and its title pins the subject to four roles: Secretary of the Navy, Rough Rider, governor and president. That combination of titles is the clearest guide to how the portrait was meant to be read, presenting Roosevelt as a man of public service and military daring rather than simply a politician. Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company of Boston produced such printed portraits in volume for schools, homes and patriotic displays, and the record dates it to sometime between 1920 and 1940, decades after Roosevelt's death in 1919.
