Made in 1902, during the second year of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, this portrait comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, the work of one of the leading women photographers of her era. Johnston was a frequent visitor to the White House in these years, and her studio portraits of Roosevelt helped shape how the public saw a president who had come to office in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. Roosevelt was known for cultivating a vigorous, direct public image, and photographs like this one were part of that effort. The print is a useful record of how the presidency was presented to the nation in the early twentieth century.
