Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president, appears here in a portrait made around 1911, several years after he left the White House in 1909. By then he had already built a reputation as a vigorous reformer, trust-buster and champion of conservation, and he was preparing for the 1912 campaign that would split the Republican Party and bring him back into national politics. The record notes that its caption card is unverified, so the exact photographer and occasion are unknown, but portraits of this era were often used to keep a former president's image before the public.
