Theodore Roosevelt, then a colonel, is shown mounted with the officers of the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, the regiment better known as the Rough Riders. The regiment was raised in 1898 for the war with Spain and drew volunteers from the West, the Southwest and elite eastern social circles, which gave it a mix of cowboys, college men and professional soldiers. This stereograph, issued in 1899 by the firm of E. & H.T. Anthony, was one of the popular card-view sets that let Americans see the war's personalities in three dimensions through a viewer at home.
