Theodore Roosevelt stands full length, facing right, to greet a man the record identifies as a colonel of the Rough Riders, with a horse at his side and mounted men behind them. The regiment, the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, was raised for the Spanish-American War in 1898, and Roosevelt served as its lieutenant colonel before his fame carried him to the presidency. Dated around 1910, about a year after he left office, the photograph shows him as a former president still closely tied to his old comrades, though the caption details come from an unverified card.
