Roosevelt is shown mid-leap over a fence, his horse angled to the right, a pose that suits the vigorous outdoor image he cultivated during his presidency. Washington photographer B.M. Clinedinst, whose studio made many portraits of officials in the capital, produced the picture around 1902, early in Roosevelt's time in office. Riding was a lifelong passion for Roosevelt, and images like this one helped the public connect the president with an energetic, athletic style of leadership.
